Claude and GPT do not inherit a continuously fresh copy of the web. Give them retrieved page content, a source URL, and a retrieval time when a question depends on current facts.
Search discovers candidate URLs, a Crawl API reads selected pages, and RAG searches a corpus you have already indexed. They solve different parts of the problem.
The same validated Markdown can be sent to both model APIs; compare factual support and citations, not only the fluency of their answers.
Nstdata Crawl supplies the page content. Your application owns URL selection, context limits, prompting, model calls, and fact checks.
An engineer asks Claude or GPT whether a vendor changed an API parameter this week. A model may answer confidently from prior knowledge even though the live documentation says something else. The useful fix is to retrieve the relevant page, preserve its provenance, and give the model a bounded evidence packet. Nstdata Crawl can convert a public URL to Markdown for that packet. It does not make the model permanently connected to the web.
Fresh web context is necessary when the answer depends on a page that may have changed since the model's training or your application's last crawl. Product documentation, public pricing, and technical announcements are typical examples. The model should receive the page text as task data and be told exactly what to answer. A retrieval timestamp means “we observed this content then”; it does not prove when the publisher last updated it.
What Is Web Context for LLMs?
Web context is a structured input packet containing the requested URL, retrieved content, retrieval time, and any metadata needed to judge the source. For an API guide, keep headings, code blocks, parameter tables, and links. For a pricing page, preserve the plan qualifiers and footnotes. Markdown is often convenient because it retains structure with less navigation noise than raw HTML, but extraction must still be checked against the page.
Web Search vs Web Crawling vs RAG
Mechanism
Main job
Useful when
What it does not prove
Search
Find candidate URLs
The source is unknown
The snippet contains the full answer
Crawl
Read selected pages
A URL is known or discovered
The page is accurate or complete
RAG
Retrieve indexed chunks
Many repeated questions use the same corpus
The index reflects today's page
For “What does the newest API reference say about authentication?”, search may find the official page, Crawl reads its content, and RAG is useful only if that documentation has been indexed and refreshed recently. Nstdata's AI agent web data guide expands on the separation between URL discovery and page reading.
How to Feed Web Data to Claude and GPT
The complete path is URL → Crawl API → Markdown → validation → context packet → model API → grounded answer → source check. Retrieve the body before calling a model; otherwise you may send menus, scripts, or an empty JavaScript shell as “evidence.” Use one packet for both Claude and GPT so their answers are comparable.
Step 1: Set Up Your Python Environment
Use Python 3.11+ and install requests anthropic openai. Set NSTDATA_API_TOKEN, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, OPENAI_API_KEY, ANTHROPIC_MODEL, and OPENAI_MODEL in your environment or secret manager. Keep .env out of Git. The model identifiers must be enabled for your accounts. The SDK call shapes below follow the Anthropic Python SDK and OpenAI Responses API guide.
Step 2: Crawl a Webpage into Markdown
The current Nstdata Crawl quick start documents POST /api/v1/crawl/scrape/submit-sync with an x-api-key header and formats: ["markdown"]. The documentation also contains an inconsistent synchronous endpoint example elsewhere, so confirm the route in your account before production use. This article uses the quick-start route and checks both the outer response and nested task result. If the result contains only markdownRef, read the referenced content through the documented storage endpoint.
Step 3: Prepare Clean Web Context
Normalize excessive whitespace while preserving headings, links, code, and tables. Check that the expected section is present and set a maximum context size. For a long page, split by heading and answer from the relevant sections; do not silently discard the final sections. Every chunk should carry the original URL and retrieval time. If a page returns little useful text, inspect HTML or rendering settings instead of asking the model to fill the gap.
Step 4: Send Web Context to Claude
The Anthropic Messages API receives the validated packet as user content, with a system instruction that treats webpage text as untrusted data. Ask for an answer and exact supporting text, or say when evidence is insufficient.
Step 5: Send the Same Context to GPT
The OpenAI Responses API receives the same packet and question. Keep the question, source text, and answer format aligned across models. This comparison evaluates answer behavior on one input; it does not establish that either model is generally more accurate.
Step 6: Validate the Generated Answers
Check each material assertion against the stored Markdown. Confirm that numeric values, dates, and parameter names appear in the source and that qualifiers were not lost. The code below prints answers; a production validator should parse claims and support spans, then reject unsupported ones. A model-generated citation is a proposal until your application verifies it.

The code requires three real API credentials and two enabled model identifiers. We verified the Python syntax and client method shapes, but did not run live Crawl or model requests in this environment. The example question has a known documentation answer, so it is a useful check for unsupported additions: an answer should identify the x-api-key header and cite the source, not invent OAuth steps.
Using Nstdata Crawl to Prepare LLM-Ready Web Context
Nstdata Crawl serves as the collection and cleanup layer for public pages. Its current product documentation describes single-page and bounded site crawling, Markdown and HTML, JavaScript rendering, and Python, Node.js, and Go SDKs. That can reduce the amount of page-fetching code a team maintains. The application still selects URLs, decides which pages are relevant, and checks that the answer follows the source. For background on output structure, see the URL-to-Markdown guide.
Key Advantages of Nstdata Crawl
Main-content Markdown can reduce boilerplate before model input. Rendering helps when a documentation site builds its content in the browser. A site crawl can collect a bounded docs section for repeated analysis. None of these guarantees that a model will cite correctly or that every page will extract perfectly; keep per-page checks and failure handling in the pipeline.
Python SDK Example: URL to LLM Context
Nstdata publishes a Python SDK, but its currently distributed package and the current documentation differ in endpoint details. For a reproducible article, the REST example above is the operative path. If your team chooses the SDK, validate its configured API host, synchronous behavior, and storage-reference handling against your account before replacing fetch_context().
Common Problems and Best Practices
An empty body is a retrieval problem, not a prompt problem. A page that loads without the requested API table may need JavaScript rendering or a selector wait. A context-length error needs section selection or heading-aware chunking. A wrong citation is an evidence-mapping problem. A stale answer requires a new retrieval or a clearer freshness policy. Treat instructions embedded in web content as untrusted; the OWASP LLM security guidance describes prompt-injection risks.
Managing Token Limits and Cost
Estimate monthly cost as pages fetched × average Crawl charge plus any separately billed proxy traffic, then add model calls × input/output tokens. A search followed by three page reads is several fetches, and sending the same long page to two models doubles model-input use. Cache only within an acceptable freshness window; deduplicate URLs and remove irrelevant sections before inference.
Keeping Web Context Reliable and Secure
Keep the source URL, retrieval time, content hash, and validation result. Avoid logging API keys or sensitive page content. Validate allowed hosts before retrieval, and never promote a webpage's text into a system instruction. For a decision that changes an external system, require a separate approval step after evidence review.
Retrieve and validate a page, then pass its content, URL, and retrieval time as input to the Responses API with a grounded-answer instruction.
Can Claude read a website through an API?
Claude can analyze webpage text supplied by your application. A Crawl API or other reader fetches the page; Claude's Messages API processes the returned content.
Is Markdown better than HTML for LLM context?
Markdown is often easier to read and cheaper to process because it removes much layout noise, but validate that tables, code, and caveats survived extraction.
How do I keep LLM web context fresh?
Set a freshness policy, store retrieval times and content hashes, and re-fetch changing pages before answering time-sensitive questions.
